I was born and raised in Trier for the first 15 years of my life. Trier is the oldest City in Germany. It was build sometime before 18 BC. by the Romans and was primarily Roman Catholic. It has the oldest archeologial Roman structures in Germany. It was hard to decide which ones to include as there are so many. The most popular is the Porta Nigra also known as the Black Gate. It was build with no mortar. The stones were fitted together and held by iron crampons. It was one of the gates for the wall that was build around the city in 180 AD to protect against hostile German Tribes. The wall was 6.4 kilometers long and later five gates were added. Remains of some of the wall is still visible today. An other point of interest is the Holy Robe wich was first displayed in 1512 and has only been shown 10 times since then. For a perid of time in 1794 the City became French after victories by French Revolutionaries. Along with Napoleonic law the metric system was imposed. During the first world war the City was bombed 50 times. The second world war destroyed 40 % of the inner City. Today Trier is a University town and a country seat and a center of Commerce for surrounding areas like Luxembourg, Belgum and France. It has approximately 100.000 inhapitans. This is about as close as I can come to some of the history of Trier. I could fill this page and probably five more, but I have a feeling you are sound asleep. So lets wake up and look at some of the pictures. |
